Background

The J-SAFE project, funded by the EU’s JUST-AG-2016-03 scheme (Grant Agreement Nº 763714) has developed highly innovative training activities, in order to train Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to counter violent radicalisation phenomena and terror-related crimes with a specific focus on prisons. This newly approach of active immersive technological solutions using Virtual Reality (VR) and serious gaming, has been shown to have great impact on the trainees.

About this webinar

This Webinar on “The Benefits of Blended Virtual Reality for Security and Justice Training” aims to show the first results of a VR training as well as raise a debate on the use of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to train LEAs.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the event will be held online through the platform GoToWebinar. It will take place on the 9th of December from 10.00AM to 11.30AM, for a total duration of 1h and a half. Targeted invitations will be sent to key professionals in the field, yet the conference will be open for registration.

Concept

Through the training activities carried out in the framework of the European research project J-SAFE, a new approach to train LEAs in understanding the processes of radicalisation in prisons, forensics operations for prevention and investigation and activities related to data surveillance within the prison environments have been developed.

In order to do so, several scenarios have been created within virtual environments to exploit the potential of the risks and train counter-terrorism officers and prison staff administrations. This enhances decision making, situational awareness and emotional resilience during dangerous, threat-to-life scenarios.

The trainings allow the Law and Enforcement officer to look around the environment in a full 360 degrees to search for indicators of possible terrorist activity and radicalisation signs and to learn how to approach digital forensics operations in prison.

To enhance the potential of the trainings is the so-called VR Blended Solution.

The methodology used in order to enhance the potential of the trainings is the so-called VR Blended Solution.

This new methodology capitalizes on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 crisis, meaning it was designed to be flexible and up scalable and adaptable at national levels.

The VR blended solution combines five training methods:

Immersive VR Training.

Contents and delivery are based on single and multiplayer activities in virtual reality, used in combination with serious gaming. This technology is both immersive and highly interactive. Individual trainees (or small groups) can interact irrespective of whether they are training in the same or different geographic locations, provided that they have an internet connection, a computer and basic VR equipment.

360° immersive learning environment

For scenario awareness, a 360° immersive learning environment is created. This technology is not interactive but immersive and can be combined with VR training in the single or multiplayer platform or can stand alone. 360° scenario awareness training requires minimal equipment and can be used independently from the other platforms, provided that trainees have a mobile phone with internet connection.

Serious gaming

The VR component is used in combination with serious gaming. The latter has been implemented in order to keep the participants involved and focused and at the same time in order to motivate them in completing exercises in time while increasing the engagement.

Synchronic and a-synchronic online delivery

This training methodology exploits the HERMES training platform. The online delivery can be combined with uploaded online seminars, live seminars, or any other traditional platform for online training, and it integrates into the virtual classrooms of the VR training, if desired. In the case of the a-synchronic components, the training content will be recorded and made available on the platform for the trainees to access it when they choose.

Traditional face-to-face lessons

Traditional face-to-face lessons, with the option to record these and combine them with the three above-mentioned methods to facilitate the participation of trainees in remote locations.
